Gund wins the title of the oldest brand on our website as well as being the oldest manufacturer of soft toys in America! Founded in 1898 in Connecticut NYC by Adolf Gund, their teddy bears were amongst the very first developed and sold in the early 1900s.
Adolf Gund was something of an innovator in his field patenting various mechanisms to make his furry creations move. On his retirement in 1925, long-serving employee, Jacob Swedlin bought the company, keeping the Gund name in homage to the founder. Gund continued to expand in size and popularity through the decades and in 1991 Creative Director Rita Swedlin Raiffe introduced revolutionary new concepts in design, fabrics and techniques, using less stuffing to produce Gund’s cuddly creatures whilst making them more huggable than ever.
