Hatley is a family business, founded by painter Alice Oldland and her husband John. The couple owned a small gift shop called The Little Blue House which Alice also used as a gallery to display her paintings. In 1986 John began screen printing Alice’s animal-themed artwork onto aprons and selling them. It was a resounding success. Over the years they widened their range to include gifts and clothing which became popular all over the world. When Alice and John retired, their 3 sons took over the daily running of Hatley including design and production. They launched a huge children’s line, including matching PVC-free raincoats, wellies and umbrellas in bright prints using artwork that would appeal to kids as well as their parents. The prints were carried across to pyjamas and dressing gowns, bags and lunch boxes, as well as seasonal clothing. The rest, as they say, is history.
